File server access rights made easy

Protect folders and hand over access decisions to your business users. Why should IT be involved?
With Folderfay requests are reduced to a simple email sent to the relevant data owner(s).

How it works

Folderfay is built cloud-first, there is no server installation. An existing Windows-based file server is all we need.
The whole system can be set up in about 30 minutes.

step 1

When trying to open a protected folder, the user is greeted by a prompt asking them to explain why they need access to the resource.

step 2

The correct data owner(s) receive the request through email and sets rights by clicking the included buttons.

step 3

The user receives a confirmation of folder access and expiration time. So do other data owner(s).

Proper branding

Folderfay email branding examples

Branding is a key pillar for any business. Completely style the request emails the way you want in our backend. Your emails won't look like the next best phishing attempt, that's for sure.

Some of our biggest benefits are described below.
Surely we can come up with more, if you really want.

Empower business users

How should IT know who is allowed access? Define relevant data authorizers per folder that can easily respond to requests.

Have a complete overview

Quickly determine who owns or has access to certain data and ensure compliance by accessing our extensive logging.

Save everyone’s time

Setting access rights is reduced to one simple click in an email. Even on the go using a smartphone, the experience stays the same.

Easy installation

We’re trying to keep things simple and cleverly extend existing Microsoft technology. Our file server service takes care of the rest.

Principle of least privilege

Folderfay can successfully reduce the risk of privilege abuse and threats like ransomware by limiting the potential attack surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the answers below can't help out, you can always get in touch.

Your file server(s) should be running Windows Server 2012 or any higher version. Next, this server needs to be able to connect to an SMTP server and be able to email our service. Running the SMTP server role locally will also work fine.
There are no special requirements for the agent service installation.
No. An on-prem version would complicate things as we update our applications frequently. We don't want to expend resources updating and maintaining backdated versions of the software.
We also leverage several Microsoft features which are only available in the Azure cloud.
The SaaS model makes Folderfay available for companies with very limited IT capabilities.
We take data protection and privacy very serious. Folderfay is built post-GDPR with latest best-practices concerning security and encryption. Two-factor authentication is available to protect your company account.
We store names and email addresses of the users using the service and the configured folder paths. There is no syncing of any user data by the agent service.
If we don't need certain data for Folderfay functionality, we don't want it.
No. You're free to use and test the basic version without any time limit.
We do remove free accounts after one year of inactivity.
Yes, as long as the disk and directory naming for all servers is the same. So all absolute paths to the files need to be the same.
If this is not the case, you'll have to define multiple file servers for now.
Multiple file servers are definitely supported (small add-on fee) and Folderfay Elite already includes 5 servers.
There is no limit to the amount of servers but one Folderfay account is limited for use of one company only. If you're an MSP you should create a new account for every company you service. See our Terms and Conditions.

Using our API in PowerShell
By Bram Vandeperre on

Over the years PowerShell has become the main scripting language for Windows-based systems. With PowerShell Core it's even possible to automate tasks and manage other platforms like Linux and macOS.

The example below will help you get started using our API in your own scripts.

The script imports folders and their authorizers in Folderfay based on a CSV file.
